Dr Patterson gained his medical degree at University of Adelaide in 1985. He undertook internship and basic physician training at Royal Adelaide Hospital and senior training in Medical Oncology at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital with specialist registration and appointment as a Consultant Medical Oncologist at TQEH (dual appointment with Lyell McEwin Hospital) in 1995. He was head of Oncology at Lyell of McEwin Hospital until 2010 and was responsible for the development of the Cancer Treatment Facility based at that site
Dr Patterson has been active in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and was director of physician training at TQEH for two years. He has been an investigator on over 50 clinical trials and lead site investigator for breast, brain and sarcoma trials at TQEH. He currently heads the clinical trials unit for Adelaide Oncology & Haematology which is based at the Calvary North Adelaide site. He is currently a member of the Australia and New Zealand Breast Cancer trials group and sits on the therapeutics scientific advisory committee. He is also a member of the Australian Sarcoma Study Group and COGNO the Australian Neuro-Oncology Trials Group.
He is a full member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and a member of a number of Australian Professional Groups (RACP, MOGA, COSA, AMA).
He consults in General Oncology and Lymphoma in the private and public sectors and has a special interest in breast and brain cancer as well as sarcoma.
